About me
My name is Tuomas Vuontisjärvi and I’m a data scientist in training. Below you will find short description of my history, as well as details about my education, experience, skills and contact info.
Who am I
At around age 25, when I began to take life more seriously, I applied to study philosophy and got accepted to Helsinki University, where I found I have an aptitude for creating, understanding, discussing and criticizing abstract ideas. I made great friends along the way and enjoyed the financial independence and pride that comes from making a side career in sales. I thought about love, studied philosophy of the mind and cognitive psychology, dove deep into pedagogical theory of learning and formulated my ideas of what constitute true expertise.
When I recognized that I have a personal interest in philosophy but was not motivated to become employed as one, I switched my career direction to mathematics and programming. After an intense year of theoretical study and doing self-driven projects, in 2023 I got a trainee position in telecommunications company Nokia. There over the next few years I became familiar with CI/Devops principles and through practical work achieved notable expertise in the area. Our product – Data Collection and Analytics Platform (DCAP) – was developed and maintained by a small organization of less than 100 persons, and my job as Devops engineer was to develop and maintain CI tools and systems for reliable and high-quality software delivery. Due to my interest in willing to expand my field of work, I got to develop the product as well.
But after a couple of years of my traineeship, I recognized that I crave problems that are challenging in a different way – I wanted to see how far my intellect and self-direction skills could take me. This need led me to apply to Data Science master’s program in Helsinki University, where I began my studies in 2025. This shift from Devops work and system expertise to statistics, machine learning, optimization and data analysis could not have been more welcome. Even though the data science tool kit is extremely useful, it is also notoriously challenging. But my studies so far have only made it clear to me that difficult challenges never fail to raise my spirits and interest, and the difficulty only increases my motivation.
Currently I’m finishing my last courses and I’m expecting to be done with them before Christmas. I’m also looking for a master’s thesis topic and developing my skills and using this website to showcase those skills.
I think of myself as a philosopher, a data scientist, a programmer, a writer, a secular Buddhist, a humanist and a great partner and a friend. I consider myself to be thoughtful, thorough, highly motivated, intelligent, consistent, process oriented, self-aware and capable.
